Being a bad houseguest will get you left out in the cold sooner or later. There are a few simple rules to being a great houseguest so if you find yourself struggling to find a friend willing to let you crash for a few days you have no one else to blame but yourself. Here is how to be the perfect houseguest.
- Spend some money on groceries
Having a houseguest cost money. For a start, people have to eat. Why not split the grocery bill or even pay the whole bill while you are there.
- Show up on time
If you tell the host that you are going to arrive on Wednesday then make sure that you arrive on that day. It is impolite to make them wait, as they must clear their entire schedule to welcome you. Make sure to always keep them updated and call if you will be arriving late.
- Bring a gift
Show your appreciation for the free lodging, make sure to bring a gift to thank them. It does not have to be a big or expensive gift, just make sure it fits their personality.
- Keep your area neat
You will be sectioned off to your area, but it is still the host’s house, so make sure to keep your area neat. Before you leave each day, make the bed and straighten the room. Put your dishes away and throw trash in the bin.
- Pitch in with the chores around the house
Make sure to always be willing to help around the house. You can help in preparing meals, washing dishes. A gracious host will not ask you for help but still, help in the end.
- Make sure the presence does not interfere with your friend’s normal routine, household duties, and career
Your friend will make time for you guys to hang out but they won’t be able to hang out with you all the time. You should never impose on their time. Remember you may be on vacation but they aren’t.
- Disclose your schedule
Let the host know your schedule every day and try to stick to it. This is important as the host needs to plan when to serve meals or how late they need to stay up.
- Do not ignore your friend altogether
Don’t let your host feel like you are only using them as a hostel. Make sure to make time for them.
- Always ask
even if you know the host for years, remember you’re a guest and always ask before doing anything.
